STANDARDS FOR HIGH-VISIBILITY SAFETY APPAREL

Frequently Asked Questions & Concerns

While here are a few of the questions we get asked most, the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) site has a full knowledge center with more detail here. Looking for more information on ANSI/ISEA? Check out our ANSI/ISEA Basics Guide

First, let’s talk about the two organizations that create the standards for the creation of high-visibility apparel: the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA). Essentially, ANSI brings together the leading industry professionals to help create standards that are submitted to ISEA, and if approved, become the national standard.

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 is the specific set of standards and guidelines that covers high-visibility safety apparel. The standard is a document for the design, performance or materials for high visibility PPE in the United States. Since then, the standard has been recognized and compliance mandated by federal, state and local authorities as well as private industry entities. Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires nearly all workers in or near a highway to wear garments that comply with the standard.
